Microcosm, 30cm x 30cm, made with texture paste (it’s HEAVY), gel medium, acrylic paint and ink. Its texture to the touch is dry like rock surface. Microcosm has organic textures inspired by nature – imagined mountains, rock surfaces and rivers. This painting initially was inspired by pictures of land affected by climate change taken by astronauts on the International Space Station and Earth observation satellites and shared by the European Space Agency online. From one of their recent posts: “Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas. It’s often caused by human activity and climate change, and it puts biodiversity, food security, and livelihoods at risk – especially in vulnerable regions.”

I don’t think we need to go to space or fill it with debris to feel empathy for our home planet, like astronauts do when they experience the Overview Effect when looking back down at earth (where they feel awe and transcendence that re-inforces love with a desire to protect Earth because it looks so fragile, interconnected to us while its resilience is what is keeping us alive).
I think we can connect to these nourishing feelings by spending time outside.

This artwork initially was exhibited as part of the Klein Wêreld! art fair was at the Conservatory at the Greenhouse Café, located in Rosemary Hill eco-friendly essential oil farm, just outside of Pretoria in South Africa. This art fair of over 400 small, affordable works by emerging and established South African artists ran from July 18th – 20th 2025. The art fair was curated by Wêreld (“which means ‘world’ –  is a South African arts organization, founded in 2015 by multidisciplinary artist, creative director and educator, Jaco van der Merwe” – https://wereld.world/). All participating works were automatically be entered  into the Klein Wêreld! art prize. This year (2025), as Wêreld celebrates its 10th anniversary, they are launching their first official residency space established at the Mtati Lagoon remotely set in the Eastern Cape.
