The African Tails auction went really well and my piece, Meditative Abstract Marks (2021) sold for R16 000, which is equivalent to 32 cat and dog sterilizations! All of the proceeds go to the hard work that African Tails does. Much gratitude to the buyer who is in Cape Town. The auction took place at the tranquil Clarendon boutique hotel in Fresnaye, Cape Town, with views of the ocean, Robben Island, Bloubergstrand and Lion’s Head.

Artist Statement

This artworks was inspired by the relaxation meditating on the visual elements of nature provides, such as the foliage and organic textures. It was an attempt at mimicking all of these aspects through mark-making.

Process:

I folded this sheet of paper and used the creases to create rough geometry and breaks for textures. I hung the page on a wall and kept adding new layers after each one had dried. I found paper disks in storage that I had cut out to be moons for my handmade bookmarks. I painted them and added those to the page last. A bit of looseness and improvisation guided by marks. Some broad sweeps of charcoal brought out the paper’s texture.

The following nature inspiration photographs for this artwork were taken by Caitlin Mkhasibe at Newlands Forest in Cape Town in 2019:
